What are POP and IMAP?

Both POP and IMAP are the protocol that email client uses to access the emails from the email server.

POP (Post Office Protocol) is an older protocol that works by contacting your email server and downloading all of your new messages from it to your local application. The major downfall of POP is that once a local machine downloads the email, the emails get deleted from the email server. Hence, if you try to access those emails from the other devices, it won’t be accessible. A lot of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) give you email accounts that use POP.

Some important highlights of POP protocols are:

  • Only downloads email from the server, downloaded emails doesn’t stay on server afterward.
  • Email server doesn’t save the records of emails sent from the email client.
  • Deleting, moving, and modification of emails on the email client sare not reflected on the email server

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is a newer and more widely used protocol than POP. IMAP is also protocol to access emails from the email server, but when emails client user IMAP to read the email, the mails don’t get downloaded or gets stored in your email client. Instead, you’re reading it from the email service. As a result, you can check your email from different devices, anywhere in the world: your phone, a computer, a friend’s computer.

Some important highlights of IMAP protocols are:

  • Email clients only read the emails from the email server. Emails stay on the server.
