Why Yahoo Mail Spam Filter Is Not Working?
There are many reasons why the spam filter on your Yahoo Mail account may not be working. Whether you have mistakenly marked an email as Spam, or you have blocked the sender of an email, you may have to face the situation where your mail account has been flooded with junk messages.
Just a week ago, I caught myself in the situation where I could not access my inbox. I was receiving pop-ups on the screen telling me that there is a new message, but when I click on it to open it, nothing happens!
This led me to do some research and I have found some easy solutions to fix the spam filter. In this blog post, I am sharing these steps with you so that your inbox is free from unwanted emails!
Your Yahoo mail spam filter is not working because:
-You have marked multiple emails as Spam and this has led Yahoo Mail to disable the feature altogether.
-The sender of an email is in your contact list, but his/her messages are going to Spam Folder anyway. This can be due to a change in his/her email address or any other reason.
-You have blocked one of your contacts from sending you emails and now all his/her messages are going to the Spam folder.
-SpamGuard feature has been turned off by mistake or intentionally, as it is a paid feature.
If you haven’t noticed any of these things happening with your Yahoo Mail account yet, it is best to turn on the SpamGuard feature right away. This will prevent any future issues and also keep your account safe from fake emails that may contain harmful viruses!
How To Fix The Issues?
You probably don’t want to spend hours and days sorting out the problem. This is why I have listed some simple steps that will help you get back control of your inbox in no time!
Unmarking The Email As Spam:
If you believe a particular message has been wrongly marked as spam, you may face issues in accessing it. You see, marking multiple emails accidentally can disable the feature altogether. So, for the proper working of the spam filter, you will have to unmark all these messages one at a time.
You can unmark the email as spam by doing the following:
- Open your Yahoo Mail account and click on “Inbox.”
- Locate the “Spam” folder, which is next to the “Promotions” section of your inbox.
- Click on “Not Spam” option under the “Actions” button. This will help you unmark the message as spam.
Moving Unwanted Mails To Spam Folder:
In Yahoo Mail, you have two different folders – Inbox and Spam. The Inbox folder contains all your genuine emails while spam is a separate section where all unwanted messages are directed to automatically by default. If you want to make sure that the messages that you receive from a particular sender go to Inbox and not Spam, all you need to do is add this person’s email address to your contact list.
That said, there may be some emails that are going straight into the spam folder even though they shouldn’t have been sent to such a section of Yahoo Mail. This is why you need to check your spam folder regularly. You can do this by clicking on Spam in the left-hand menu bar of your inbox and then click on ‘Not Junk’ under the Actions button.
To move the unwanted emails to a spam folder, you need to follow these steps:
- Open your Yahoo Mail account.
- Select the unwanted email/folder.
- Now, locate the email that you got in your account by mistake.
- Then, click the email and finally select ‘Spam’ option under ‘Actions’ button.
Alternatively, you can just click on the ‘Spam’ option in the top menu bar to move any message to the spam folder.
Checking The Filters:
If you are still finding some emails going into spam, it might be because Yahoo Mail has blocked them automatically using the filters. This is why you need to check the filters in your Yahoo Mail account and make sure that they are all set correctly.
To check the filters;
-Click on the Gear icon and go to “Settings.”
-Go to the “Filters, Blocked Addresses” tab.
-Here you can check if your filters are working properly or not.
Blocking The Sender:
In case, you have already marked the sender as spam but still, you are finding their emails in your inbox then there is a strong possibility that these messages may be getting blocked by Yahoo Mail. You can fix this problem on your own without having to contact customer support for help.
You need to follow few simple steps;
- Go to the “Settings.”
- Then, select the “Filters, Blocked Addresses” tab.
- Click on “+Add a New Address or Domain” option and enter the sender’s email address that is sending unwanted emails in your inbox. You can also block full domains from where you are receiving those messages with no exceptions.
Modify SpamGuard Options:
If none of the above-mentioned methods are working for you then it means that there is a problem with your SpamGuard settings. You need to fix this issue on your own or seek help from the Yahoo Mail customer support team. First, you have to turn off the option and see if emails start going into the spam folder as expected. If they do not then re-enable this option and keep SpamGuard settings as it is.
